Climate change and the future of snow and mountain tourism destinations

Within the framework of the UN Tourism Agenda for Europe, this project addresses the pressing need to secure the long-term sustainability and socio-economic viability of snow and mountain tourism destinations in Europe. As climate change threatens snowfall reliability, destinations are challenged to adapt and innovate.
The project focuses on identifying challenges, sharing successful case studies, and developing actionable strategies for adaptation and diversification of snow and mountain tourism destinations. Using a participatory, cross-border approach, the project engages experts and stakeholders to exchange existing knowledge and foster inclusive solutions. The initiative will provide practical recommendations to support adaptive transformation.
One of the project’s major milestones has been the completion of a survey conducted December 2024 and February 2025, which received 133 responses from 31 countries. The collected data will feed into a comprehensive research paper focused on climate impacts, adaptation strategies at both local and national levels, and case study development.
A validation workshop hosted by Switzerland is planned for autumn 2025 to share findings and identify best practices. The final report is scheduled for release in 2026 and will be presented during the 13th World Congress on Snow, Mountain, and Wellness Tourism in Andorra.
