The University of Technology, Mauritius was created in the year 2000 by an Act of Parliament and operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Education and is governed by the provisions of the UTM Act 2000. Its vision is to be a leading internationally recognised university, driven by innovation, for a sustainable future. The university mission is to assume a leadership role in the offer of academic and capacity-building programmes as well as scholarly activities for sustainable development. The aim of the university is to provide access to a wide range of students for the acquisition of knowledge and skills with which they can make future professional contributions in various key sectors of the socio-economic and technological advancement of Mauritius and aspire to become dynamic players in regional and international activities. The objectives of the university are:

  • Provide multi-level tertiary education including continuing professionaleducation, in such disciplines as it thinks appropriate to meet the needs of Mauritius, with emphasis on technology, sustainable development science and public sector policy and management, while making provision for the recognition of prior learning and flexibility of transition between programmes.
  • Provide research, development, consultancy and other services for industrialor commercial organisations, public bodies or individuals.
  • Serve as a centre for fostering co-operation, partnership and exchange of ideabetween the academic community on the one hand and the public and private sector on the other.
  • Give a regional and international dimension to its teaching, research,consultancy, development, service and other activities.
  • Foster and encourage the advancement and development of knowledge andskills, and their application to research and other means, through industry, the service sector, commerce and the public sector
  • Exploit commercially for its benefit the services and resources of the Universityof Technology
  • Promote entrepreneurship and a complete education amongst students
